Post Surgical Wining

Category: the Rant Board

Post 1 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Wednesday, 14-Nov-2012 23:49:30

I guess the topic title says it all. lol
I feel like I've been punched in the face and there's no end in site.
What people have told me about the 6th or so day being the worst after a tonselectomy appears to be correct. My surgery was last Friday and things have been getting progressively worse.
My throat hurts. My gums hurt. My ears hurt. My head hurts. Hell, even my teeth hurt.
Oh yeah, have I mentioned lately that I would really really like a cigarette right about now. Quite obviously I'm in no condition to have one but if someone could please communicate that little news flash to my nicotine addled mind, that'd just be super.
Everything tastes terrible. The post op scabs in my throat are totally gagging me.
I've heard that it gets better after the first week and then I've heard that it doesn't get better for 3 to 4 weeks.
The hydrocodone is kicking my ass too. I'm either completely spaced out or very wrestless but unable to focus on anything. Everything is on my nerves.

Well, that pretty much sums it up from hospital corner. lol Now for the disclaimers.
Why did I post this? Hell, I don't know. Perhaps it's because everything hurts and I have 45 minutes until my next painkiller dose. Either that or I'm just really bored and everyone else here is asleep.
Do I think I'm the only one in the world who's ever experienced pain? No, of course not. I just don't happen to care too much about that right now because this particular rant is all about me. lol

Ok, now I'm just being goofy.
Catch yall later.

O no! hope you'll be feeling better soon. you better consult your doctor for some remedy. I can't imagine that.

Raaj.

Hope you'll be feeling better soon, DG. Hang in there!

Post 4 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2012 9:16:51

Sadly, MM, this is all normal. This is just a really really tough surgery for adults. I do have a follow-up appointment tomorrow so it'll be good to get the doc's perspective on how the healing is going.

Thanks,Ocean. Definitely continuing to hang. Besides, its not like I have a choice. lol
Talk to yall soon.

Awww. Thoughts and prayers are with you, DG. Wish there was more I could do to help. Let us know what the doctor has to say about your healing.

Aww, thanks, SD.
Surprisingly, I just had about an hour of feeling relatively ok. Woohoo. Perhaps I've hit that day 8 turningpoint? I sure hope so.

I'm looking forward to being back on Team Talk next week probably.

Sounds painful, but at least you have some optomism. I had a hurnia when I was younger, and after the surgery it was hard to walk. At some points, my brother made me laugh and I would flinch in pain. Healing can be painful, but at least you are healing.

Post 8 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2012 20:16:43

Man, my son's school is having a fund raiser tonight at a BBQ joint. Of course we're going but it's gunna suck not to be able to get ribs. grrrrr lol
Mac and cheese it is.
I think this will be the most solid food I will have attempted to eat.

Post 9 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 17-Nov-2012 13:17:06

Ug, when will this ever end. I thought it was supposed to get better, not worse.
Yesterday the doc said everything looked good but I needed to start eatin gmore solid food and switching to OTC pain killer.
In my usual fashion, I completely over did it last night at dinner and ended up in so much pain that I was litterally shaking uncontrolably for about 20 minutes.
New plan. Take pain killer only when it's time to eat.
I'm kind of at that point in recovery where I'm asking myself what the hell I must have been thinking. I just want to heal from this and get back to life.
I know it could always be worse and I really should count my blessings that it isn't. This really makes me feel for people who have to deal with chronic pain. I don't deal well with pain, especially the never ending kind.
On a lighter note, I've lost 10 pounds and haven't had a cigarette in 8 days.
Yall know what I call that? Permission to enjoy the holidays.

I've never had that particular surgery, but I've had enough surgeries and pain over the past 12 years to last a lifetime, so I definitely sympathize with you. I'm glad you are trying to keep a sense of humor in spite of the pain. SOMETimes a sense of humor is the only thing that has saved me...well, that and good pain meds.

GOOD luck with your continued recovery.

Well, it's been a rough couple of days but today wasn't as bad. Yay.
I've slept more over the past couple of days than I have since before having my son 8 years ago. lol Seems to be helping though. Today has been an ok day.
I think maybe, just maybe, at the risk of jinxing it, the worst is behind me.
Ok, if you're easily grossed out, quit reading now.
Last night I blew my nose and one of my stitches came loose. lol I wasn't sure if I should continue to pull it out or just leave it there, hanging out of my nose. I very gently pulled, and would have stopped at the first hent of pain, and it came right out. That was a very strange feeling. Yuck!

Anyway, thanks again for all the well wishes, and just for listening to me wine. It helps more than yall know.

Well I know surgeries are no joke: my wife's had two of them. I know it's a process that isn't any fun and you're just left to muddle through it. But sounds like you're doing. Hoping for all the best; pulling for you out here.

As am I. My advice is, get into the bed in the fetal possition and start wimpering like a scared puppy. It'll end soon.

I'm happy to report that I'm finally back to my old self. I only have a minor sore throat and nose now, no big deal at all. This will continue to improve as the scar tissue softens or whatever.
I must say that this was definitely the hardest surgery. I'm glad I did it though as it did solve my problems with sleep apnea. I'm sleeping so well now that I'm dreamiing. I haven't drempt in years. lol
I wake up feeling rested too. Yay!
Thanks so much to all of you who listened to me wine. lol Thanks also for the encouragement and well-wishes.
Yall rock!

Oh yeah, two other quick awesome things. 1. I'm able to eat pretty much everything now except for chips, nuts, and other excessively dry foods.
2. I am still smoke free! Woopwoop! Go Me!

This light hearted humourous take on this lovely situation is something I wish I had written when I got my wisdom teeth out twelve years ago. Except replace nicotine and cigarettes with caffeine and coffee. LOL Throwing up from all the fucking painkillers but needing them to survive, wanting some sanity and wishing I could handle hot coffee in the wounded mouth. LOL Hope it gets better soon.

Post 21 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 04-Dec-2012 11:08:30

Oh man, wisdom tooth exctraction is a major bitch.

Post 22 by Leafs Fan (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 05-Dec-2012 13:48:16

I didn't think I'd ever be able to eat again LOL

Post 23 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Monday, 17-Dec-2012 18:07:24

Ugh, I remember that all too well. three of four wisdom teeth showed up on my x-ray and were impacted. Once the novacaine wore off, my mouth hurt for at least a week. the anesthesia from the IV sedation made me a bit queasy too. Percaset and ibuprofin were my friends. I hated the diet I was on, even though it was temporary. No solids, nothing hot, etc.
